HILLBILLY SOLID with SILAS HOUSE
Hillbilly Solid is a monthly, hour-long program hosted by Kentucky author Silas House featuring music, readings, poems, interviews, and more, covering a wide range of songs, stories, people and ideas pertaining to life in Appalachian Kentucky. The program was created here at WMMT and is now produced in conjunction with WUKY in Lexington.
WMMT airs Hillbilly Solid on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m., and if you miss the broadcast you can stream or download past episodes here (we're starting to update the archive again!).
Hillbilly Solid 1-23-13
In January 2013 installment of Hillbilly Solid, host Silas House welcomes acclaimed novelist, poet, and short story writer Ron Rash to the program. Rash, a native of South Carolina who grew up in North Carolina, has had several novels, poetry collections, and short story collections published, and all told, his work has appeared in over 100 magazines and journals.
Rash joins Silas to talk about writing, music, and his work, including his latest collection of short stories, Nothing Gold Can Stay. As always, before the interview, Silas spins and talks about some of his favorite music. For more Hillbilly Solid, check out the streaming archives here.

Hillbilly Solid 11-28-12
In the November edition of Hillbilly Solid, host Silas House welcomes bell hooks, an author, activist, feminist, poet, teacher, and artist from Hopkinsville, Ky.
hooks, currently a Distinguished Professor in Residence in Appalachian Studies at Berea College, is the author of over thirty books, including the widely-influential Ain’t I a Woman? Black Women and Feminism, and a brand-new book of poetry, Appalachian Elegy. She and Silas discuss a number of issues & things, including hooks herself, writing, her work, Appalachian identity, and much, much more. And, as always, Silas spins some of his favorite music, including cuts in this program from My Morning Jacket, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Cat Power, and more.
Hillbilly Solid 10-24-12
In the latest episode of Hillbilly Solid, host Silas House welcomes special guest Jason Howard to the program. Howard is a Kentucky author whose newest book, A Few Honest Words: the Kentucky Roots of Popular Music, profiles many of the wildly successful musicians across many genres (from the Judds to My Morning Jacket to The Nappy Roots) who hail from Kentucky and how their sense of home is woven into their work. Silas and Jason discuss the book and the musicians that it profiles while listening to selections from these Kentucky artists.

Episode 6 features interviews with poet Marianne Worthington and singer/songwriter Caroline Herring. Silas takes time out to read from Harriette Arnow’s novel The Dollmaker published in 1954. Also featured is new music from Ryan Adams, Those Darlins, Gomez and others.

Hosted by Silas House – In this episode House interviews writer Charles Dodd White. Hear poems by George Ella Lyon and Sylvia Woods. Featuring music by Kasey Chambers, Amy Winehouse, music from the new tribute to Buddy Holly entitled Rave On Buddy Holly, and more.
Hosted by Silas House – In this 4th of July episode House features new music by My Morning Jacket, Gillian Welch and more. Also featured are poems by Jane Hicks and an interview with Appalachian author Crystal Wilkinson.
