LARRY SPARKS and the LONESOME RAMBLERS at BGX LIVE
THURS., DEC. 6, 7:30 P.M.
The APPALSHOP THEATER
Larry on the Appalshop stage during BGX Live in December of 2011
WMMT is proud to announce the latest installment in our longstanding, pioneering, live-performance bluegrass show, Bluegrass Express Live!, and we’d be honored to have you with us.
On Thursday, December 6, the Appalshop will host one of bluegrass music’s living legends, the incomparable Larry Sparks (www.larrysparks.com). The self-dubbed “youngest of the old-timers” began as one of Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys in the late 60’s before starting his own band, the Lonesome Ramblers, in 1969. Over the last forty years, Sparks’s immediate, soulful vocals, unique guitar work, and distinctive sound have captured the hearts of several generations of fans, and with the release of a new album, Almost Home, just last year, Sparks continues to build on a legacy that already stands side-by-side with those of the bluegrass greats.
The show will start at 7:30 p.m. in the intimate Appalshop Theater at 91 Madison Street in lovely downtown Whitesburg, KY. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for students and children. Food and beverage concessions will be available. Reservations or more info at (606) 633-0108.

BLUEGRASS EXPRESS LIVE!
Thursday, September 6 @ 7:30 PM
The up-and-coming bluegrass band NewTown from Lexington, KY is set to take the stage for Bluegrass Express Live! at the intimate Appalshop Theater in Whitesburg, KY on Thursday, September 6, 2012. NewTown features five artists demonstrating a vast array of acoustic music styling. The band is able to journey into a realm of their own while still maintaining the spirit of the legendary bluegrass and “Newgrass” sounds created within the walls of Lexington’s Red Slipper Lounge during the mid 70’s.
NewTown is Kati Penn on fiddle and vocals, Jr. Williams on banjo and vocals, CJ Cain playing guitar, James Kee on mandolin and vocals, and Terry Poirier on bass and vocals. NewTown creates their sound as a cohesive musical unit with a tangible diversity to which all listeners can relate.
Join us for Bluegrass Express Live!, Thursday, February 9 and see bluegrass the way it should be at the Appalshop Theater. It’s like having them in your living room. For more information and/or to make reservations call WMMT at 606-633-0108. Doors open at 6:30 PM with showtime at 7:30 PM. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for kids & students.
Concessions provided by Letcher County 4H.
Come on out!
So we here at WMMT couldn’t be more excited to announce that it is officially Seedtime Week here at the Appalshop! The 26th Annual Seedtime festival will kick off on Thursday evening with a very special Seedtime edition of our acclaimed, long-running live performance bluegrass series (the best Live Performance Radio this side of WSM, if you must know), Bluegrass Express Live.
Normally at BGX, if we have an opening band in addition to our headliner, the opening band gets a short set while the headliner plays a longer, two-set show. We’re so excited about both of our groups on Thursday, however, that both The Tommy Webb Band and Heather Berry & Tony Mabe will receive equal time and equal billing!
Some information on the two artists that will kick off Seedtime 2012:
The Tommy Webb Band
The Tommy Webb Band is an Eastern Kentucky-based bluegrass band that has been winning fans both here at home and across the country since their founding in 2005. They have released four full-length albums, including the 2011 release From Rock n’ Roll to Bill Monroe. The album, and its title track especially, became a favorite here at WMMT quickly after its release, and has spent a great deal of time charting among the top 35 bluegrass albums nationwide. Webb is a Floyd County (Ky.) native, and we’re thrilled to bring him and his band back to the Appalshop stage for a performance close to home.
Heather Berry & Tony Mabe
Heather Berry is a Virginia native who combines lovely, affected, “song-bird” vocal work with Mother Maybelle-style arch-top guitar accompaniment to create a captivating mixture of bluegrass and folk. She is accompanied by the versatile Tony Mabe, who plays everything from the autoharp to the mandolin to the guitar to both Scruggs and clawhammer-style banjo. The couple have recently signed with Mountain Fever records and have just put out a brand new record, the self-titled Heather Berry & Tony Mabe Show, as well as a single, “Walk Slow,” which quickly became a hit here at WMMT.
We couldn’t be more excited to be able to have both The Tommy Webb Band and Heather Berry & Tony Mabe kick off the 2012 Seedtime festival. Just as with every BGX Live!, the show begins at 7:30! Call WMMT this week at (606) 633-0108 or email us at [email protected] to make your reservation. As always, tickets are $15 / $5 for students and kids. See you Thursday night!

An enormous and heartfelt thank you to everyone who made it out to our most recent Bluegrass Express Live! this past Thursday night. Those in attendance were treated to two excellent shows, both by the opening Kelley Nelson Band and our headliners, NewFound Road.
The Kelley Nelson Band started the evening off with a delightful set of tunes that showcased Ms. Nelson’s lovely, gripping vocal work. NewFound Road then followed with a full two sets of alternately heartfelt and rollicking, high-energy bluegrass, showcasing a great deal of dynamic range, instrumental ability, and more than anything, a great love for what they do. The band was having a blast onstage, and the feeling was contagious.
Also taking part in the evening was one Mr. Wayne Taylor of Blue Highway, who was on hand to enjoy the show but was called up onstage before the evening was over.
Thanks again to all for coming out! For more photos from the evening, check out WMMT’s flickr page. In the meantime, see y’all on the radio, and, if not sooner, at the May edition of BGX Live! which will feature none other than Dale Ann Bradley and Steve Gulley right here in the Appalshop theatre on Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. For more info or for reservations, get in touch with WMMT at (606) 633-0108.
