In this edition of Mountain News and World report, we’ll travel back in time to visit with some of the master artists of our region – quilters –by listening to some footage from the 1976 Appalshop film Quilting Women produced by Elizabeth Barrett.
Then we’ll hear from quilter Virginia Brown, the youngest of the talented Gibson sisters of little Cowan, on her reflections on the tradition today. Virginia and her sisters had some of their work on display at the 2012 Seedtime on the Cumberland festival at the Appalshop.
But first we begin in St. Paul Virginia, at the site of the Dominion coal fired power plant. Rich Kirby reports on a conversation between renowned Appalachian scholar Helen Lewis and lawyer and community leader Frank Kilgore, on their ideas for how we can prepare for a new economic future for our region.
